The balisong knife is internationally known through its pop culture appearances in movies and video games. Through a community of balisong practitioners who train in artistic manipulations called “flipping” and compete in flipping competitions. And through Filipino martial artists who train in the fighting aspects with this weapon. What is less well-known is that the balisong is a Filipino cultural icon.
The Filipino balisong knife is also called: butterfly, fan, Bentenueve, and Batangas knife. The balisong knife is a utilitarian tool, an intimidating knife. It is used for a popular performance art and an essential equipment for a niche sport.
