Roger Del Valle is an arnis practitioner. He trained under Crispulo Atillo (Atillo Balintawak)1 and Filemon “Momoy” Canete (Doce Pares/San Miguel Eskrima)2 3 In various articles and social media posts, Roger Del Valle has been referred to as either Grandmaster or Master.4 His style is called Magkakaibang Arnis del Valle.5 6 Others have also said his style was called “Kakaibang-Arnis (unique arnis)”.7 8 The website Tagalog.com defined kakaibang as “[adjective] unique; strange; weird; different; odd; bizarre; unusual; exotic.”9
Master Roger was born on August 8, 195210 11, in Labangon, Cebu.12
Master Roger is known for his unique sakit-sakit technique demonstrated with either 1 or 2 long rattan sticks gripped in a non-traditional manner. He described it as shadow boxing13. In Tagalog, sakit means pain.
Grandmaster Robert Castro of Eskabo Daan and his school demonstrated it at the August 16, 2009 Brotherhood of Warriors Seminar in San Francisco, CA14. A year earlier Eskabo Daan was in the Philippines. Grandmaster Rodillo ‘Rodel’ Dagooc, owner of Smokingsticks Arnis Cane Maker and founder-organizer of Dagooc Arnis System (D.A.S.), introduced Eskabo Daan to Master Roger Del Valle and sakit-sakit.15 “Sakit-sakit uses the 30 inch rattan stick and is held in a horizontal position on the chest area with both arms folded around the stick. This position, although awkward at first, allows one to transition between the long range of Largo mano to the short range of Serrada within seconds, with a quick repositioning and switching of one’s hands as desired.”16
Master Roger demonstrates sakit-sakit “could strike an opponent from such a compromised starting position by transitioning the stick from one hand to the other followed by a series of hand-traps and strikes to his attacker.”17 Eskabo Daan learned the technique well to share what they learned at the Brotherhood of Warriors Seminar.18
Master Roger’s handling of both single and double stick is more noteworthy considering he is missing his left thumb.19 A commenter on another YouTube video said “Have you noticed Master Roger’s hand? He was injured when he was trying to defend himself against a guy armed with a blade. He was able to survive a bladed encounter.”20
Doug Marcaida, a martial artist, edged weapons specialist, knife designer and a judge on the History Channel’s Forged in Fire television show, commented on this YouTube video “Single Stick Disarms (Blade-based) by Master Roger del Valle (Kakaibang Arnis)”. He wrote “There are other attributes developed from this methodology. Coordination, speed, fluidity. In his case great posture. Sino si Mang Riger anong systema? Looks very much like the systems in luneta.”21
